George Philipp Telemann's short comic opera "Pimpinone: The Unequal Marriage Between Vespetta and Pimpinone or The Domineering Chambermaid" is a story that has been told often in theater, opera, movies, and television sit-coms: a wealthy but homely bachelor (Pimpinone) hires a clever and attractive chambermaid (Vespetta) looking for a rich boss (soon-to-be-husband.) But, Vespetta, well: She’s something else! The heroine character is strong-willed, conniving, entertaining, obviously well educated on a number of subjects, and makes Pimpinone’s heart go pitter-patter. He may be a nerdy bachelor with industrial strength pocket-protectors, but he has a few tricks up his sleeve as well. Is this a match made in heaven, hell, or merely for the comedic intermezzi of 18th century Hamburg? Early music stars from around the USA join TEMP’s Austin regulars for this entertaining and virtuosic music. TEMP core-member Gitanjali Mathur (soprano) sings the role of Vespetta and New York’s Peter Walker (baritone) portrays the put-upon title character in this performance, set in current times and fully staged, and with supertitles for easy comprehension of the comedy and pathos. Donald Livingston (harpsichord) leads the accompanying period-instrument ensemble. Join us for intimate, expressive, and comedic chamber music at its most beautiful and most entertaining! Heard Presents: Coattails ATX EP Release w/ Torino Black, Shapescenes, Billy King & The Bad Bad Bad November 8, 2018 at Empire Control Room & Garage $7 General Admission | $10 Day of Show Doors: 9pm | 18+ ♦︎ COATTAILS ♦︎ "Waves" single from upcoming EP Imaginary Friends premiered on Treble Zine: https://www.treblezine.com/coattails-waves-premiere/ Formed in February 2013, Coattails have gained a notable local audience as well as a regional following. Their debut self-titled LP was independently released in early 2016 and are currently working to release a follow-up EP due out summer 2018. Coattails are a modern rock band that pulls from the late 60's rock-n-roll pioneers, garage rock, and early delta blues. Their sound is aggressive with an interlacing of soft and spatial soundscapes. ♦︎ TORINO BLACK ♦︎ Torino Black is a band formed in Texas but with roots from around the world. Their music is filled with melancholy lyrics and indie rock rhythm tangled in Venezuelan and Spanish influences. ♦︎ SHAPESCENES ♦︎ The band Shapescenes is an emerging four-piece alt / post punk / new wave group from Austin, TX. Their sound has been described using words like "dance-ish", but to be pigeonholed would sell short the actual sound which is a lush and anthemic culmination of four fairly diverse musical paths. Shapescenes was originally formed in 2012 by the collaboration of Chase Anderson and Jared Templeton who relocated to Austin from the Amarillo area. Initially, the pair formed a much darker, more electronic version of what the band has evolved to be. After a few lineup changes, including the addition of Kyle Johnson (also from the Amarillo area) on synth and bass and native Austinite, Mark Son, on drums, Shapescenes has become a more guitar-driven, rhythmically dynamic, and dance-influenced rock band. ♦︎ BILLY KING + THE BAD BAD BAD ♦︎ Road to the CMA Awards Live Concert featuring Kalie Shorr: 4-6 p.m. Nov. 9, 710 E Ben White Blvd, 710 East Ben White Boulevard, Austin. A pre-concert reception begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Laurie Auditorium lobby, featuring local artists and exhibits of art and fashion from the Middle East. Michael Ibrahim explains the WHY of this performance in the following statement. "The concert speaks of the contributions of Arab women to the arts. It is a direct contradiction to the current narrative that is offered in the mainstream media, or a narrative that is based on the assumptions of how a culture works. Through simple facts and presentation, this concert highlights the accomplishments of Arab women in the arts, shows the tremendous impact women have had on artistic culture in the Arab world, all while presenting the music at the highest level possible."
